{"id":229,"date":"2010-10-24T11:28:15","date_gmt":"2010-10-24T16:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karanovic.org\/blog\/?p=229"},"modified":"2014-01-12T20:38:45","modified_gmt":"2014-01-13T01:38:45","slug":"new-article-contentious-europeanization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karanovic.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/new-article-contentious-europeanization\/","title":{"rendered":"New Article: Contentious Europeanization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My first article is finally published!\u00a0 &#8220;Contentious Europeanization: The Paradox of Becoming European through Anti-Patent Activism&#8221; is being published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandf.co.uk\/journals\/journal.asp?issn=0014-1844&amp;linktype=145\">Ethnos: Journal of Anthropology<\/a>.\u00a0 The full citation, abstract, and the pre-print version of the article are available on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karanovic.org\/blog\/publications\/\">my Publications page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to Ethnos editors Nils Bubandt and Mark Graham for a thoroughly encouraging peer review process which immensely improved the paper.\u00a0 I am also indebted to Alberto Barrionuevo, who has kindly given me permission to reprint his photo <a href=\"http:\/\/gallery.ffii.org\/v\/BxlStbRizox050706\/c_2005_A_Barrionuevo_2_00048.jpg.html\">&#8220;Sea Battle of the Software Patents at the European Parliament,&#8221;<\/a> (CC) 2005-07-05, Alberto Barrionuevo, license <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\/es\/deed.en\">Creative Commons BY-SA Spain 3.0<\/a>.\u00a0 This photo effectively captures the political imagery engaged in disputes over software patents in the European Union.\u00a0 So when my article was accepted for publication, I started looking for the author in order to secure permission for reprinting the photo with the text of my article.\u00a0 In the two months of e-mailing that ensued, I discovered that the photo had been archived, published, (re)named, (re)contextualized, and edited on various websites, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ffii.fr\/Victoire-au-Parlement-europeen.html\">An editorial<\/a> entitled &#8220;Victory in the European Parliament&#8221; by G\u00e9rald S\u00e9drati-Dinet, then-president of FFII France.\u00a0 The photo was attributed to Gustavo Broos and entitled &#8220;David and Goliath.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>FFII gallery of online photos, which was since been re-done and <a href=\"http:\/\/gallery.ffii.org\/Strasbourg050705\/00071_G\">the old URL does not work any more<\/a>.\u00a0 As of 2006, when I checked this website the last time, the photo was also attributed to Gustavo Broos and named &#8220;David and Goliath \/ giant, goliath, behemoth, monster: someone or something that is abnormally large and powerful.&#8221;\u00a0 Gustavo said that he remembered coming up with this name, but he was not the author of the photo.<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/gallery.ffii.org\/v\/BxlStbRizox050706\/c_2005_A_Barrionuevo_2_00048.jpg.html\">newer FFII gallery site<\/a> credits the photo to Alberto Barrionuevo and gives no title for the photo.<\/li>\n<li> Alberto Barrionuevo on his website offers a &#8220;web ready version&#8221; of the photo which, as he pointed out in an e-mail, has been edited to remove the cable which appears in the front plan of the original image.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eventually I decided to use the image from the FFII gallery website (which does contain the cable) and add Alberto&#8217;s title and the terms of his license (CC BY-SA Spain 3.0).<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to numerous free software activists whom I contacted along the way in my attempt to reconcile the multiple tracks of activist archiving, editing  and repurposing the photo as documentary evidence with publisher&#8217;s  demand of finding the single author who could give the reprint permission  in conventional copyright terms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 351px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow: hidden;\">\n<p><!-- p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } --><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: 150%;\"><em>Gustavo Broos, entitled &#8220;David and Goliath \/ giant, goliath, behemoth, monster: someone or something that is abnormally large and powerful&#8221; available online at http:\/\/gallery.ffii.org\/Strasbourg050705\/00071_G, last accessed 28 June 2006.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My first article is finally published!\u00a0 &#8220;Contentious Europeanization: The Paradox of Becoming European through Anti-Patent Activism&#8221; is being published in Ethnos: Journal of Anthropology.\u00a0 The full citation, abstract, and the pre-print version of the article are available on my Publications page.
